Toronto film festival

Jane Fonda, whose area of expertise is unknown, has signed a letter criticizing the Toronto Film Festival for presenting a number of films from Tel Aviv, as part of its 'City to City' program.

I have to wonder why she was involved - repetitious exercise videos make one an intellectual or filmmaker?

QUOTE:
Some 50 intellectuals and filmmakers, including Briton Ken Loach, have accused the Toronto film festival of "complicity with the Israeli propaganda machine" over its spotlight this year of Tel Aviv.
The Toronto International Film Festival chose this year to present 10 films on the Jewish metropolis by local filmmakers for its "City to City" programme, which each year focuses its lens on a different city.

END QUOTE.

Seriously, what is she? Is she now claiming the status of intellectual?

QUOTE:
"As members of the Canadian and international film, culture and media arts communities, we are deeply disturbed by the Toronto International Film Festival’s decision to host a celebratory spotlight on Tel Aviv. "
END QUOTE.

QUOTE:
The emphasis on 'diversity' in City to City is empty given the absence of Palestinian filmmakers in the program. Furthermore, what this description does not say is that Tel Aviv is built on destroyed Palestinian villages, and that the city of Jaffa, Palestine’s main cultural hub until 1948, was annexed to Tel Aviv after the mass exiling of the Palestinian population. This program ignores the suffering of thousands of former residents and descendants of the Tel Aviv/Jaffa area who currently live in refugee camps in the Occupied Territories or who have been dispersed to other countries, including Canada. Looking at modern, sophisticated Tel Aviv without also considering the city’s past and the realities of Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza strip, would be like rhapsodizing about the beauty and elegant lifestyles in white-only Cape Town or Johannesburg during apartheid without acknowledging the corresponding black townships of Khayelitsha and Soweto.
END QUOTE.

Very well. Even assuming that today's Tel Aviv incorporates areas which were villages in the past, and acknowledging that Jaffa is now part of the Tel Aviv conglomeratus, what exactly are you saying?

Are you saying that the only cities worthy of consideration are those with no past?
By that measure, not only would not a single city in the Americas be worthy of consideration, but likewise not a single European city, and certainly no city anywhere in the Mid-East. All are built, like Troy, on the remains of previous settlements. All have, even today, resentful enemies who lament their cause.

Even Toronto, per Wikipedia, "when Europeans first arrived at the site of present-day Toronto, the vicinity was inhabited by the Huron tribes, who by then had displaced the Iroquois tribes that had occupied the region for centuries before c. 1500" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toronto).

New York was New Amsterdam, and before that it belonged to native Americans. London was a Celtic city. Istanbul belongs to the Greeks, why is it now filled with Turks who refuse to move? Paris was Gaulish - who are those people speaking a Latin-based creole plus Arabic who brutally occupy it now?
Alexandria was Greek, Cairo was once a Goptic center - now both groups are minorities there.

Not to belabor the point, but all cities have a past that includes displacement and migration. That is the nature of cities and states. An awareness of history, and a minimal degree of cultural literacy, would have told you so.

The purpose of a film festival is to highlight the creativity of the film makers. Not to make political points and enforce ideological rigidity. For that you really need to go to the former Soviet Union, or today's North Korea.

If it weren't for the Jews?

Found this on Israpundit:

Falsehood: There is no Palestinian state today because of Israeli aggression and obstinacy.

Truth: There is no Palestinian state today because of Arab aggression and obstinacy. In late 1947, the United Nations approved by a two thirds majority a proposal to create in to create in Western "Palestine" two states to replace the British Mandatory regime there. One would be Jewish and the other a Palestinian Arab state. The Jews agreed. The Arabs rejected the idea. The Arab states launched an attack of genocidal aggression against the Jews, invaded "Palestine" and gobbled up the lands earmarked for the Arab Palestinian state. Most of those lands were then held illegally by Jordan and semi-legally by Egypt until 1967 when they were liberated by Israel in the Six Day War. The Arab world has maintained a state of war with Israel since 1948, refusing to recognize its legitimacy, and attacking Israel over and over in a series of wars and terrorism campaigns. The Arab states attacked Israel in 1948, 1956, 1967, 1973, 1982, 2006, and sponsored terrorist atrocities against Jews in Israel since it was created. The reason for the attack which produced the first Arab-Israeli war in 1948 is exactly the same thing that stands in the way of any real peace settlement today.

The 14 Lies Blocking Peace in the Middle East

It is instructive, at this point, to remember the infamous THREE NOS of KHARTOUM.
Which have been reaffirmed by the Fatah members meeting in Bethlehem. Fatah's position, as clarified at that conference, is that until Jerusalem, ALL of Jerusalem, is free of a Jewish presence, there can be NO negotiation.

And naturally they agreed that violence is the answer (if, Allah forbid, they don't get their way).

'If I forget thee....'

Very well then. What's to negotiate?

Peace between Arab and Jew

In 1948 the Jews accepted partition, and offered peace to the Arabs.
The Arabs refused.

In 1967 the Jews won a major war, and wished to discuss peace.
The Arabs refused.

In 1973, the Jews survived an Arab attack on Israel, and repelled those who wished to slaughter them. Again, they desired peace.
The Arabs refused.

Several times since then, more often than can be counted, Israel has tried to achieve peace. The Arabs refused.

The Arabs do not wish to discuss peace with Israel because Israel speaks from a position of strength.
Were Israel to speak from a position of weakness, the Arabs would see no reason to talk peace.
Consequently it is unlikely that there ever will be peace between Arab and Jew.

That being so, why bother treating the Arabs as potential negotiating partners?

US pressure on Arab states

It's about time. The US administration is finally putting pressure on the Arabs. But the chances are that it will be nowhere near as arm-twisty as what they've done to Israel. Because so much less can be expected from those people.

The Arabs have seldom cooperated with the United States, whereas those pesky Izzy's have reputation for doing so.

Oh, and the pesky Izzy's lack oil. That probably also has something to do with it. Oil seems to have an undue influence on foreign policy.

Quote:
The Obama administration has been frustrated by the lack of movement on all sides but has reportedly been particularly disappointed by how little Arab countries have been willing to do or even promise.
End quote

Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/8172034.stm

"it's been one of the administrations biggest disappointments"

A disappointment, he says.
Just wait till it's time to put pressure on our European friends - they're far more uppity than the Arabs and Izzy's.

Palestine does not exist, and should not exist

Everybody seems to agree that Israel should allow (or enable) the Palestinians to create the state that is rightfully theirs.

Except, it isn't. Palestine is a geographic term of Roman origin. Palestinians, therefore, are the people who live in Palestine. At present, the "Palestinian" population consists of Jews, Arabs, Turks, Armenians, Greeks, Assyrians, and several Baptist missionaries who can't read maps and figure out how to leave (they've been there for almost a century, which is somewhat longer than many of the Arabs).

In 1948 the Jews formed a state in the areas that they controlled. Meaning more or less the areas where they were both a majority and the dominant group. They extended equal rights to non-Jews. The other Arabs were appalled, and with British encouragement (and several ex-Nazis advising them) tried to destroy the new state, fully intending to slaughter the Jews. They failed. The Arab war against Israel was fought by Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Iraq, acting on behalf of the entire Arab umma. The idea of a separate state for "Palestinians" was rejected at that time by the Arabs, and in any case, were unconcerned with the weal or woe of the "Palestinians".
The Arabs lost.

In 1967 the Arabs again fought against Israel, again rejecting the concept of a Palestinian state. This time, Syria, Egypt, and Jordan fought on behalf of the entire Arab umma. The goal was not the creation of a state for Arabs, but the destruction of a state for Jews. The fate of the Palestinians was not germane, exterminating the Jews was, again, the goal.
The Arabs lost.

In 1973, the Egyptian and Syrian armies launched a surprise attack. Their aim was to wipe out the shame of previous failures to slaughter the Jews and conquer Israel. The idea of liberating the Palestinian Arabs, most of whom lived in Jordan and miserable refugee camps in Lebanon, was not foremost, and possibly not even hindmost, in the minds of the generals, sheikhs, and politicians of the Arab world at that time - their lost honor was the fuel that drove their war.
The Arabs lost.

There never has been a Palestinian Arab state. The Palestinian Arabs exist as a people only in opposition to the Jewish state. Palestinian nationalism, until 1967, existed solely as a hatred of Jews. Since 1967 Palestinian nationalism has been fuelled by the discrimination against "Palestinians" by Jordan, Lebanon, and Egypt - who conspire to keep them in camps, or deny them the rights of citizens, though supporting their desire to kill the Jews.
The only way that the Palestinian Arabs will win the respect, love even, of other Arabs, is if they restore Arab pride by eradicating the dishonor of three disastrous wars and exterminating the Israelis.

Given that the only reason that there are Palestinians is the existence of Israel, the removal of Israel will mean the end of the Palestinians.

Perhaps that is why the world backs the creation of a Palestinian state. Two birds with one stone.
